Το σύγχρονο
αστικό τοπίο της Βηρυτού είναι αποτέλεσμα των γεωπολιτικών συνθηκών της χώρας
και των μαρτυρικών πολιτικών εντάσεων. Η
βία άφηνε πάντα τα σημάδια της στα κελύφη των κτηρίων, αφήνοντάς τα κούφια, και τελικά επιτρέποντας στη φύση να εισβάλλει τους απομένοντες τσιμεντένιους σκελετούς.
Beirut’s
contemporary cityscape is the product of the country’s geopolitical situation
and tormented political tensions. Violence had always left its mark on the
city’s buildings’ skins, hollowing these, and leaving nature to invade every
left out concrete skeleton.
Η Βηρυτός σε
προσκαλεί να αλλάξεις την κατανόηση σου περί του τι σημαίνει το άνοιγμα σε μια όψη. Το όριο μεταξύ ενός αρθρωτού παραθύρου και της μνήμης ενός βίαιου γεγονότος είναι μονίμως ασαφές όταν διαβαίνει κανείς την πόλη. Το Stone Garden ορθώνεται ανάμεσα σε και σε αντιπαράθεση με τα λίγα εναπομείναντα παραδοσιακά σπίτια με
κεραμοσκεπές και τις τσιμεντένιες μάζες που συγκροτούν το αστικό τοπίο της
Βηρυτού. Το κτήριο συνδιαλέγεται με την περίεργη μελαγχολική ευφορία που εμμένει
τόσο στο κτιστό όσο και στο φυσικό τοπίο της πόλης.
In
Beirut, you are invited to change your understanding of what a façade
opening might mean. The boundary between an articulated window and the
memory of a violent event is constantly blurred once strolling in the
city. “Stone Garden” stands side by side juxtaposed with the few remaining
traditional tiled-roof houses and the identical concrete masses rising in
Beirut’s cityscape. The building dialogues with this strange melancholic
euphoria that persists within both the built and natural landscape of this
town.
Το project επιχειρεί να υλοποιήσει σε κτιστή μορφή τη χωρική εμπειρία της παιδικής ηλικίας όπως βιώθηκε στη διάρκεια του Πολέμου του Λιβάνου. Ο πύργος αναδύεται από το έδαφος ως η κτιστή μορφή της ζωής και του θανάτου, της παρουσίας και της απουσίας, της εξαφάνισης
και της διαχρονικότητας, της ομορφιάς και της ωμότητας…
The
project materializes in a built form a spatial experience of a childhood lived
amidst the Lebanese War. The tower emerges from the ground, as a built form of
life and death, presence and absence, evanescence and timelessness, beauty and
rawness…
Τοποθετημένο
κοντά στο βιομηχανικό λιμάνι της Βηρυτού, το project βρίσκεται στο χώρο όπου ιδρύθηκε η πρώτη εταιρία
σκυροδέματος στη Μέση Ανατολή, Darwish Haddad, κι εκεί όπου ο σημαντικός Λιβανός αρχιτέκτονας Pierre El Khoury είχε κάποτε το γραφείο του. Ο γιός του, Fouad El Khoury, γνωστός φωτογράφος,
κληρονόμησε το οικόπεδο και συμμετείχε με την οικογένειά του στην ανάπτυξη αυτού του project πάνω στα ερείπια ενός υπάρχοντος κτηρίου.
Located
near the industrial port of Beirut, the project takes the site where the first
concrete company, Darwish Haddad, in the Middle East was established, and where
a notable Lebanese architect, Pierre El Khoury, had once had his office. His
son, Fouad El Khoury, a photographer of renown inheriting the land, endeavors
with his family in the development of this project on the ruins of an existing
building.
Το project ενσωματώνει
τη διαρκή αυτή διαλεκτική και εμφανίζεται ως γλυπτή μορφή, ακολουθώντας
τους κτηριακούς κανονισμούς: Εγείρεται σαν μια σμιλεμένη φυσική μάζα, λαξευμένη με το χέρι, με μαεστρία. Η όψη του διακόπτεται από ανοίγματα παραθύρων διαφορετικών μεγεθών. Εκτός από τα οπτικά κάδρα, αυτά τα ανοίγματα είναι σχεδιασμένα ως αφαιρέσεις μάζας έτσι ώστε να δημιουργούνται ευχάριστα φυτεμένα μπαλκόνια, διανθισμένα με την ενέργεια της δημιουργίας τους. Με ποικίλα μεγέθη, προσκαλούν τη φύση να αναρριχηθεί,
εξατομικεύοντας κάθε κατοικία και κάθε επίπεδο αυτού του αστικού γλυπτού.
The
project embodies this constant dialectic and emerges as a sculpted form drawn
to the building regulation lines: It rises with as a labored earthly mass,
skillfully chiseled by hand. Its façade hollowed with different sized windows.
Beyond viewing frames, these openings are drawn as mass-subtractions to become
enjoyable planted 'balconies', imbued with the energy of their making. Of
various sizes, they invite nature to climb up to the skies of individualizing
each housing floor at every level of this urban sculpture.

BIOGRAPHY
Lina Ghotmeh is an Architect
leading her practice Lina Ghotmeh — Architecture in Paris. Born in Beirut in
1980, she graduated with distinction from the American University of Beirut in
2003. In 2006, she received the first prize for the Estonian National Museum
Competition leading her to establish her first partnership practice to realize
this exceptional project set at the heart of Estonia’s cultural capital.
Her current practice Lina Ghotmeh
— Architecture is research-driven and gathers a team of 25 professionals of
various disciplines. Echoing Ghotmeh's lived experience of Beirut – a
palimpsest of unrest - the office’s work is orchestrated as an “Archeology of
the Future”, where every project develops from thorough historical and material
research learning from a vernacular past to build a new “déjà-là”.
Architectures emerge as such from a close understanding of their environment
resulting in a symbiotic and ecological dialogue with earth.
Lina Ghotmeh’s works include
“Réalimenter Masséna”, a wooden tower dedicated to sustainable feeding and
awarded by Paris’ call for innovative projects, "Stone Garden", in Beirut,
where craft is at the heart of the building’s making. Among other projects, her
studio is currently designing and leading the construction of the new Hermès Manufacture, a passive building in Normandy, and the urban rehabilitation of
the Maine Montparnasse grounds in Paris.
She has lectured internationally
and has taught at the Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture. She now holds teaching
positions at Yale School of Architecture and University of Toronto. She is
copresident of the RST ARCHES Scientific Network and the recipient of multiple
awards, including: the 2020 Tamayouz “Woman of Outstanding Achievement” Award;
the French Fine Arts Academy Cardin Award 2019; the French Academy Dejean Prize
2016; the Grand Prix Afex 2016; and the French Ministry AJAP Prize 2008. Her
work is currently exhibited at the 17th Architecture Biennale in Venice and has
gotten widely published by the likes of Phaidon, RIBA, Domus and Architectural
Record.
