The diploma thesis of Giannis Dramilarakis and Theodore Theodosiou entitled ‘Traditional Naval Craftsmanship Centre in Chalkida’ was presented in April 2018 at the Department of Architecture of University of Thrace (DUTH) and supervised by the professors Theoni Xanthi, Panos Kokkoris and Dimitris Loukopoulos.

The diploma thesis presents a holistic new approach regarding the fate of naval architecture in Greece. The country relied on naval architecture over the centuries and developed an exceptional level of intimacy with the sea and the boat construction processes due to the dependence on trade and fishing. Over the years though, this close connection weakened. The development of synthetic ship technology, alienation from the naval culture, political decisions and the lack of a relevant educational institution are the main reasons behind this weakened connection to the traditional marine element.

The city of Chalkida was chosen due to the profound relation with the naval culture and the sea. Even nowadays the city has two traditional shipbuilding workshops among the few remaining in Greece.

Our intention was to create a space that will give to the people stimulus in order to redefine the lost connection with the traditional naval art. The main design tool was the production process, through a viable plan, that would create the much-needed friction between the community and the workmanship together with active participation and education. An open lifelong museum that would also act as a fully operational naval craftsmanship workspace.

The architectural idea is based on 3 major principles. The first principle regards the appropriate zoning of the two main functions of the complex(promenade - work) that are located at two different levels, therefore all the work-related spaces can be found at ground level (+0.70) while the promenade stands at the road level (+5.00). Secondly, visiting the place should become an everyday habit to the people of the surrounding areas. This can be achieved through the integration of an existing pathway of the site into our architectural proposal and is to become the main walking and observation axis. Thirdly, the incorporation of our suggestion with the surrounding area and the neighboring green park, so that the green element does not seem to have a clear border and intrude into the proposal.

Our proposal on its core is a lightweight shelter that follows the coastline and holds all the required functions of the building program for the naval production while peacefully integrating itself into the surroundings -the open sea, the topography and the landscape.

The shelter, that serves as the main element of the composition, was designed in relation to the topography of the site and the adjacent coastline so that the ships can easily move in and out of the water. Also, the need for an efficient and flexible space for the boat construction led us to the use of the hollow shaped wooden carriers as the main structural body of the shelter and on these elements a straight line - a deck.

Beside the shelter, there are the two supportive/additional buildings. The carpentry - dryer for the raw materials (wooden logs) and the Parlour (greek word Sala), an area where the ships are designed. Our goal was that these two buildings would act as a border to the architectural composition but at the same time due to its low scale, as a blank canvas, enabling the observer to appreciate the virtue of the shelter.
