Title: Cultural Center in Xanthi.
Students: TraianosKyriakides,
PolyxeniSiskou and Pavlos Fytopoulos.
The study area is the old stadium A.O. Xanthi,
which is located on the northern border of Xanthi city, at the foot of the Rhodope
Mountain range, in the southern part of the "Samakov" area and
opposite toKosynthos river.
The first attempts to build the stadium began in 1906, but due to the prohibition of such activities by the Turkish authorities, the works were aborted. After the re-establishment of the “Orfeas” sports club in 1908, the stadium hosted various gymnastics events and athletic competitions. The first official football game took place, in 1919. After 3 years, works began again to get the stadium in its final shape, with the completion of the northern raised stand area. In 1989, further additions were created, and the southern grandstand was completed. After team disputes, in 2004, Skoda Xanthi was moved to another location and the stadium has been unused since then.
Our design proposal was based on the composition of a Cultural Center that will function as a breath-point of reference, in a neighborhood which is degraded and located on the edge of the city corner. Our ambition was, our proposal, to contribute to the creation of spaces, which will offer visitors a beautiful view and at the same time bring them into contact with the rich cultural material of the region.
The main concern of the design was the exploitation of perimetrical visual escapes towards the river and the mountain as well as the creation of a complexthat will take advantage of every possible visual aspect. The continuity of the public space, the transparent and free routes, the creation of frames and optical escapes that finish in open and transparent passages, are elements that characterise the proposal.
Therefore, the project had to differentiate itself from the rest of the city’s urban environment and become a bold project, which, however, should be widely accepted, by the local community. A place of discovery and exploration and not simply, another project among the city's assets, but an important project that structures a place, a park and a center of cultural development.
The final design proposal includes a system of diagonal lines that constitute the main levels and create spaces, on which the building volumes are displaced, while a central line root, leads the visitor from the main entrance to the park.
The upgrading of cultural, architectural, and urban scape is achieved not with the help of luxurious materials or “precious” architecture but in the form of multiple volumes which tend to fully respect the elevation differences (slopes) of the ground. For this reason, part of the composition was placed in recession, creating a 30mx30m open space, which acts as the center of the synthesis. Green roofs were imposed as a continuation of the natural terrain, applying the principles of bioclimatic design.
The city's public main street now functions, as an interactive walking route and the pedestrian traffic is catered through plazas and multiple stop-and-go points that have as a reference the human interaction. Central theme to this concept idea has been the diagonal connection of the public main street with the neglected existing green space of the city and the creation of spaces where visitors feel familiar and act as part of the same community.
The building program with a total area of 6,400 sq.m.
consists of an equipped amphitheater hall with 115 seats, a conference room, a
library with a reading room, dance and teaching rooms, workshops, offices, an
exhibition area with trade stands, cultural clubs, restaurant, cafes, and shop
areas as well as a small kindergarten. The above closed spaces are complemented
by outdoor theatrical configurations with a central stage and a visitable
observatory
